Doug Mataconis: “Why Isn’t Anyone Paying Attention To Mitt Romney?”

“It’s really quite interesting,” writes Doug Mataconis in a Below the Beltway post titled Why Isn’t Anyone Paying Attention To Mitt Romney?

While Giuliani leads the pack in national polls of the Republican candidates, it’s Romney who’s in the lead in each of the early primary states whether you’re looking at Iowa, New Hampshire, or South Carolina.

Let’s say those polls hold out, and Romney wins two of the first three contests — or even all three — do you really think it will be long before Giuliani’s inevitability starts looking a whole lot less inevitable ?

I’ll admit I haven’t paid much attention to Mitt Romney so far, though what I do know hasn’t impressed me much at all. Perhaps it’s time I started taking a more critical look at the former Massachusetts Governor.

First, welcome to the party, Mataconis. Second, the line of your reasoning follows precisely the arc of the Romney bubble. Regard:

        1. I haven’t paid much attention to Mitt Romney; what I do know hasn’t impressed me much at all.
        2. While Giuliani leads the pack in national polls of the Republican candidates, it’s Romney who’s in the lead in each of the early primary states whether you’re looking at Iowa, New Hampshire, or South Carolina.
        3. It’s time I started taking a more critical look at the former Massachusetts Governor.

Statements (1)-(3) reflects the dawning realization of a lot of people. Romney has prospered because no one has taken him seriously (1). Now that he has purchased, at tremendous cost, solid leads a full 60 days out from the primary contests in the early states (2), he is suddenly going to get a lot of attention. How will he perform under the harsh lights of center-stage—that is, (3)? We predict: Not well. Consider this botch of an interview for example, in which a sympathetic journalist tries, and fails, to put a human face on the frantic automaton called Romney:

opinionjournal’s Carney confirms the centerlessness of Romney even as he argues otherwise

Welcome to the bursting of the Romney bubble.

          yours &c.
