Crowley and Scheiber: “For all the attention Rudy Giuliani got with that Pat Robertson endorsement earlier this week, the numbers increasingly suggest Romney is going to be the GOP nominee”

“For all the attention Rudy Giuliani got with that Pat Robertson endorsement earlier this week, the numbers increasingly suggest Romney is going to be the GOP nominee,” write Crowley and Scheiber in a New Republic puff-piece titled Is Romney Running Away With It?

Crowley and Scheiber believe that based on the polling, Romney will win the nomination. This would be a sad testimony to the weakness, corruption, and internal contradictions of a depleted GOP, and yet further evidence of an exhausted, dispersed, and compromised conservative movement. But we as a people tend to get the leadership that we deserve, e.g. Carter, Clinton, and, even more sadly, the 2 Bush presidencies, the elder one of which liquidated the Reagan legacy, and the younger one of which liquidated the Gingrich legacy.

(This is not to say that we would ever vote for Romney. Faced with a GOP lined up behind Romney, we would vote Democrat for the first time in our lives. We may be resigned to the corruption of our times, but we don’t have to participate in it.)

Crowley and Scheiber add this almost as an afterthought:

… Actually, there is one other thing that could derail Romney [other than Huckabee rising in Iowa], though I’m not sure how it would play out as a practical matter: All the rival campaigns (particularly McCain and Giuliani) seem to loathe Romney. The feeling seems to be, “If we don’t win, then we at least want that guy to lose.” As I say, I don’t entirely know what the upshot is, but maybe you can imagine some scenario where McCain or Giuliani starts fading and decides to sacrifice himself to take out Romney …

How would this play out as a practical matter? We have some thoughts:
